Who Might Be Eligible for Weight Loss Medication?
To be prescribed weight loss medication, most people will need to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. However, this isn’t the only factor we consider.
If your BMI is between 27 and 30, you may still be eligible if you have certain health conditions that are linked to your weight. These include:
- Depression or low mood related to weight.
- Acid reflux or GORD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease).
- High blood pressure.
- Erectile dysfunction.
- Cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart disease, atrial fibrillation).
- Joint pain from knee or hip osteoarthritis.
- Asthma, COPD, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
- High cholesterol.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- Hormonal changes linked to peri-menopause or menopause.
Our clinicians review each case individually, taking into account your overall health and any conditions that might benefit from weight management support. Even if your BMI is below 30, you might still be suitable for treatment if weight is affecting your physical or emotional wellbeing.
